Entry requirements vary for different Universities depending on which high school certificate you hold, and for which field of engineering you would like to study. For engineering, the main subjects are Mathematics and Physics. Generally, universities look to admit students who have succesfully completed these two courses in their respective high schools into their engineering programs. Please visit the website of the respective university that you are planning to get into for more detailed information on entry requirements.
Heres a List of the Top Engineering schools in the world. The rankings are according to the THES-Q world univeristy Rankings 2008/2009
1. MIT (US)
No university has been able to come close to displacing Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as the world’s best engineering school at the moment. In fact, it looks stronger and stronger as the years pass by. While engineering and technology are the two key drivers of the university, MIT does provide other wide range of courses which include humanities, arts, business, management and economics.
2. University of California, Berkeley (US)
Just like MIT, which was conceived during the World War II, University of California Berkeley was also established around the same period, and was in fact actively involved in the production of weaponry and bombs during the War. The school, which is considered a breeding zone for world’s top athletes and sportsmen, continues to become a great rival of MIT until today.
3. Stanford University (US)
The founders of the school - the Stanford couples - who decided to build a small university in remembrance of a tragedy (the demise of their own son) probably did not have the slightest idea how big the school would grow. It expanded so much that today it is sitting in one of the largest campus lands in the world. And not only that, it becomes one of the most admired engineering schools not only by Americans, but students from all over the world. Stanford University website.
4. California Institute of Technology, Caltech (US)
With only a few thousand undergraduate and graduate students at one time, California Institute of Technology or Caltech is often considered as one the most selective schools in the world. Only those who are really meant to be here will gain admission. Located in Pasadena, California, the university continues to give particular emphasis to the world of science and engineering, and is a proud home for a NASA laboratory center.
5. University of Cambridge (UK)
Made up of over 30 smaller colleges, University of Cambridge is consistently ranked among the top universities not only in the UK but also across the Europe and the world. Cambridge is a great rival of Oxford, with the two often associated with one another, and termed “Oxbridge”. Cambridge becomes the university of choice for many of the royal families and their ancestors. University of Cambridge website.
6. Carnegie Mellon (US)
Founded by Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Mellon University continues to become a strong force in engineering and science. To solidify its status as an elite university, Carnegie Mellon also offers respected courses through different colleges and schools, including the Carnegie Institute of Engineering, the College of Humanities, the Mellon College of Science, the Tepper Business School and the John Heinz College.
7. Imperial College, London (UK)
Imperial College is located in South Kensington, a relatively expensive London suburban, and close to prominent arts, academic and cultural institutions such as the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal College of Music. 8. Georgia Institute of Technology (US)
More popularly known as Georgia Tech, the Georgia Institute of Technology was first established by offering only one course - mechanical engineering as part of the US’ coordinated effort to revive the industrial economy. Later, it evolved to provide more and wider choice of engineering programs. Apart from being a top university for engineering and computer, Georgia Tech is also a preferred place for arts, architecture, management and humanities studies.
9. University of Tokyo (Japan)
A big number of over 30,000 students populate the University of Tokyo at one time, and is presently considered the number one engineering school in Asia. The university was founded during the time when Japan was under the governance of the famous Meiji emperor, advocating the study of medicine from both western and eastern culture. University of Tokyo operates through 5 different campuses, located in different districts in Tokyo.
10. University of Toronto (Canada)
Located in Ontario, Canada, the University of Toronto is a public university with main emphasis on research and development. The school was first built in the 19th century under the purview of the Church of England, and made its name through a number of successful discoveries and findings, including stem cell research, development of insulin, electron microscope and multi-touch engineering platform.
